605’s Paws for a Cause w/ The Spill Canvas a Success!

We were thrilled with how well Paws for a Cause went. The band was great with the fans and animals, and the fans brought so much needed supplies – some even donated cash as well. Best of all – at least one dog was adopted on the spot :)

Thank you so much for everyone who helped out: The Spill Canvas (and Nikki over at Warner Bros.), Kori and Monique from the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society, Jennifer from Pickle Barrel for donating delicious sandwiches for everyone, and everyone at Candace Ann Photography for being amazing as always.

We look forward to the next event and are so ecstatic with the responses we have been receiving!

“Green” Evenings by Design Go Celebrity

Fedora-lovin’ Jason Mraz sported a recycled media tape tie at this year’s Grammy Awards where he took home two that evening. Tamra from Access Hollywood also sported one of Anita Kealey’s “green” designs to the Academy Awards. Looks like Kealey’s “green” Evenings by Design wears are making their mark!

Creative Writing Submission.

Interested in submitting creative writing to 605 Magazine? Here is a letter from Creative Writing Editor Ryan Allen:

“To our 605 Readers:

At 605 Magazine we are dedicated to providing an outlet for young adults to find and speak their voice. We need it now more than ever. There’s a lot to think about, a lot on our plates: global warming, 2012, socialism, Sarah Palin, Facebook relationship status. We’ve gotta figure out where to work and who we’re gonna marry, or even if we’re gonna get married at all. We’ve gotta decide where to eat, where to drink tonight, where to sleep and how to come to terms with it all tomorrow morning.

In Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Hunter S. Thompson writes: “Every now and then the energy of a whole generation comes to a head in a long fine flash, for reasons that nobody really understands at the time—and which never explain, in retrospect, what actually happened.”

At 605 we want to dive into this mystery. We want to figure out what’s happening while it’s happening.

We are now accepting previously unpublished poetry, short fiction, and creative nonfiction that taps into the characters, settings, images, and themes of these times; poetry and prose that explore the contours of the “long fine flash,” writing that channels the voice and vision and energy of our Midwestern people, towns, neighborhoods and streets.

We seek ambitious, thought-provoking and carefully edited and revised manuscripts. We are not interested in sing-songy rhymes, hokey plots or trivial characters. We want to read manuscripts that avoid cliché and over-sentimentality. Show us what we need to see. Speak for us what must be heard.

General Submission Guidelines

Prose should be double-spaced and 1,000 words or less. Please submit only 2-3 poems at a time. Simultaneous submissions are acceptable only if identified as such. Please send immediate notification if piece is accepted elsewhere. Payment is the pride of a byline.

Use 10-12 pt Times New Roman or a similar font. We will not accept submissions by mail. Anything sent by mail will not be read and will not be returned. Please send all submissions to Ryan Allen, Creative Writing Editor, at rallen@605magazine.com. Attach files as Word or rtf. documents. Other formats will not be accepted.

In the subject line of the email please use the following format—Name: “TITLE OF SUBMISSION” and in the body of the message please provide a brief biographical note, which should also include your name, phone number, and email address.

605 Magazine reserves the right to reprint; otherwise, copyright privileges revert to contributor.

There will be a conversation bucket, a chance for everyone to share any green news and notes with a ’round-the-room, and a talk on the future of biofuels by Poet Energy’s Director of Public Relations Nathan Schock.

As always, Green drinks is free. Ideas and friends always welcome.
